Just started a fresh character to pass an hour this morning and grabbed myself a rapier, at +4 it's already crushed the last giant, pursuer and dragonrider first try, including runs to the bosses. I'm not exactly great at DS2 but my god this thing's R1 feels so safe to punish enemies with, think I've had to down 2-3 chugs ... This hexer build handles pretty much anything in the game with relative ease. It’s my favorite. 15 STR, 12 DEX, 20/20 INT/FTH, 20/20/20 ATN/VGR/END, INT/FTH to 30/30, VGR to 50, higher ATN and END to taste. Don’t level VIT beyond 10. Start as Sorcerer and buy the Rapier from Lenigrast, then farm the Old Knight Hammer from Heide’s Tower. Never had to change it. So Ricards has the best dex scaling but medium base dmg, while the Espada has great dex scaling as well and higher base dmg. I honestly don't know at which point the scaling of Ricards outclasses the Espada. I would advice Ricards anyway, because I don't like that the on handed Strong attack of the Espade is a parry.
