I have a John deere 990, 2003. Only about 600 hours on it. worked great until 2 days ago. Would crank just fine, but not catch. It grabbed a few times, but shut off in less then a few seconds. Acted like no fuel. Checked fuse box, fuel lines, changed both fuel filters, there is fuel in all lines including one leading to mechanical fuel pump.I am here to share my years of experience with you – be it repairing your mower/tractor or caring for your lawn. Tractor. John Deere 990. Able to pull the shaft out after taking the weight off the front tires. Out popped the ball bearings at each end also but found them easily. The problem appears to be the rear coupler is worn, causing it to "hop" over the ball bearings which make the clunking sound. Was trying to figure out what disks were on the Deere 990 that were falling off, but am guessing it is an attachment you were speaking of. If it was Deere brand, I think the dealers all have next-day service. But not knowing the age of the attachment, can't speculate. The 990 was a cheap line of re-branded Yanmar tractor, if I recall correctly.Defective spark plug. Clogged air filter. Clogged gas cap vent. Clogged carburetor. Our "rebrand" JD1050 has been a real peach, No major issues since '87. It's sure enough a rebrand as it looks exactly like it's yanmar equal except for paint and emblems.
